The Digital Twin (DT) Hub at Penn State is a cross-disciplinary research initiative under the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) and the Cocoziello Institute for Real Estate Innovation. The hub fosters cutting edge fundamental and applied research in Digital Twins that position Penn State as a global leader in this field. Research efforts cut across disciplines leveraging expertise across all 13 colleges and key research institutes.

  • Digital twins could help melt the mystery of Alaska’s thawing permafrost

    Researchers at Penn State have developed an artificial intelligence-powered modeling framework that uses fiber-optic sensors to monitor and predict permafrost degradation in the Arctic, offering a new tool for monitoring the stability of buildings and roads in this warming climate.

  • Digital Twins Hub’s Faculty-in-Residence Program highlights mentorship, research

    The Digital Twins Hub, one of five research hubs jointly housed under the Penn State Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) and the Cocoziello Institute of Real Estate Innovation, has launched a new program that spotlights University researchers integrating digital twins in innovative ways and to bridge the literacy gap between emerging technologies and undergraduate education.

  • New seed grant program accepting proposals for multi-disciplinary research

    The Penn State Institute for Computational and Data Sciences has announced the new Mid-Scale Seed Grant Program, which aims to accelerate multi- and interdisciplinary research collaborations involving computational and data sciences methodologies, especially those that could contribute to one or two of the institute’s five research hubs and/or affiliated centers. Proposals are due Oct. 22.

Vision

The Digital Twin Hub envisions a future where Penn State leads nationally and globally in the science and application of digital twins. The hub aims to accelerate interdisciplinary research, ethical implementation, and workforce development in digital twin technologies to improve decision-making and innovation across industry, government, and society. By advancing the foundational science and computational infrastructure of DTs, the hub will close the gap between current capabilities and their real-world transformative potential.

What is a Digital Twin?

Digital twins are virtual representations of physical systems that are continuously updated with real-world data, and are both informed by and can affect physical system state. They hold significant promise for transformative advances in manufacturing, healthcare, energy, defense, and other critical sectors. The DT Hub emphasizes foundational and applied research, ethical frameworks, workforce development, and coordination of high-impact, collaborative efforts across Penn State. The DT Hub is under the Cocoziello Institute for Real Estate Innovation and ICDS. It is strategically aligned with research hubs in AI, Quantum, Computational Sciences, and Data Sciences. The DT Hub leverages computational infrastructure and platforms like ROAR and RISE to drive discovery, innovation, and societal impact.
